In recent times speculation about the health of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was raised before his recent hospital visits. Thus, with Abe visiting the hospital twice in the last week, concern naturally increased.
Flashbacks to his first term in office are bound to increase concerns about his health. This relates to stress and his ulcerative colitis that blighted his first term in power. After all, Abe resigned suddenly in 2007 because of health issues related to internal scandals within the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
2020 is a disaster for countless nations all over the world. Thus pressure from Covid-19, economic downturn, the postponement of the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and other ills will be causing Abe enormous stress. Equally, all these ills related to Covid-19 mean Abe’s workload was further increased.
Abe said, “Today, I received detailed explanations about the results of the tests from last week, and I had additional tests. I’m making sure I’m in good health, and I plan to keep working hard.”
It should be stressed that President Jair Bolsonaro of Brazil and Prime Minister Boris Johnson of the United Kingdom both caught Covid-19. Indeed, Johnson became extremely sick and at one point it appeared that he might lose his life. However, Johnson recovered while Bolsonaro remained confident at all times.
Hence, the media in Japan should not increase unneeded pressure and the same applies to politicians who are opposed to Abe. Instead, it is hoped that Abe will release further details shortly.
Therefore, other senior members of Abe’s cabinet need to increase their workload – just like in the United Kingdom when Johnson was extremely ill – during this difficult period for Japan.
After this, Abe and the LDP will take the issue more seriously in the worst-case scenario. Hopefully, Abe’s health issue isn’t so serious but based on taking thorough precautions because of fatigue.
